PEOPLE are being asked to fly the flag to celebrate our amazing county on the third annual Somerset Day.

Kathy Ford, who is organising a several events in Bishops Lydeard to mark the initiative on Thursday, May 11,has launched a campaign, #FlyTheSomersetFlag for #SomersetDay.

She said: "I want to encourage people that they can support Somerset Day by just displaying the flag."

Show your pride in Somerset by displaying the flag in a window or in your garden.

The project comes as Somerset County Cricket Club unveils a new NatWest T20 Blast shirt inspired by the flag of Somerset.

The club's head of commercial operations Jez Curwin said: “This year’s shirt is a real departure from anything that we’ve ever done before.

“As a club we are proud to represent the people of Somerset and what better way to do that than for the players to wear the county colours when stepping out on to the field.”

Meanwhile, Nigel Muers-Raby, chairman of Somerset Day organisers Passion for Somerset, said the event has really taken off this year.

He said: "There are a number of events across the county and our Twitter account had 40,000 impressions in March.

"We're beginning to get people starting to say we should be proud of our county because it's incredible what we've got.

"We just don't talk about it enough. It's not a lack of passion, it's just about having something to focus that passion on.

"We're a great county and we shouldn't run ourselves down. Perhaps we take it for granted and don't realise that we live in this amazing place."
