AS the clocks are set to change to bring the UK back to dark evenings, Age UK Somerset is warning people to do some overdue home-checks.

Time will jump back an hour on Sunday, October 30, marking the end of British Summer Time.

The charity believes that it is worth making a list of DIY jobs or hiring someone to do the jobs for them, as emergency call-outs could end up more expensive.

John Alexander, Age UK Somerset, said: “Preparation is essential when it comes to protecting your home and reducing the chance of having to fork out for urgent call outs when the weather gets even colder, which can prove expensive.

"There are a number of worthwhile checks homeowners could think about in advance of the winter months which could save them time and money in the long run.

"It’s also worth digging out your insurance policy terms and conditions and checking you are covered for incidents such as storm damage and burst pipes in advance of winter.”

The charity says home maintenance is a requirement of most home insurance policies, such as Age UK Home Insurance, for any claims against weather damage to be valid. Homeowners are encouraged to use the last few weeks of fairer weather to check that the exterior and interior of their homes are “winter-proof”.

Age UK's list includes:

Roof tiles – Get a recommended tradesperson to take a look at the roof to check all the tiles are properly secured and everything is sealed correctly.

Guttering – Now is a good time to check that the guttering is clear. Ensure any leaves or obstructions that have the potential to cause a blockage when the weather gets worse are removed, and pay special attention to the ends of the guttering or any junctions. If you are unable to safely look at the guttering around the home you may wish to consider asking a friend or family member if they are able to help or get in touch with a recommended tradesperson.

Boiler – If you haven't already had your boiler serviced this year now is a good time to do so, before the winter chill really sets in. It’s important to get your boiler serviced regularly by a registered professional and while they are with you ask them to check that the radiators are all in good working order too.

Insulation – To keep your home warm over the winter it’s vital to have the appropriate insulation for the loft and cavity walls. Efficient double glazing can also help keep more heat in the home. It’s worth speaking to your energy provider to ask if you might qualify for free energy saving home improvements.
