FORMER Somerset schoolgirl Maddie Hinch is a step closer to an Olympic medal today (Saunday, August 14).

Maddie, 27, who attended King's College, Taunton, was the goalkeeper for Team GB's women's hockey side as they kept their 100 per cent record in the group stage.

She saw her side beat the previously unbeaten USA 2-1 in Pool B last night to advance to the quarter finals.

They will be favourites when they meet Spain, who finished fourth in Pool A, in the last eight tomorrow (Monday, August 15) at 10pm our time.

One more win would guarantee Maddie, who hails from Keinton Mandeville, and her team mates at least a bronze medal, although they will be hoping to go all the way.

Team GB have been in sparkling form in Rio, with previous wins against Australia (2-1), India (3-0), Argentina (3-2) and Japan (2-0).
