POLICE have arrested seven suspects in relation to an aggravated burglary in Somerset more than seven years ago, where valuable paintings and jewellery were taken.

The men from the South West, South East and the Midlands were arrested for offences in connection with the burglary following what police call "a complex and detailed investigation".

The property in the Bruton area of Somerset was targeted in March 2009, when 15 well-known and valuable paintings, expensive jewellery and silverware were taken.

A dawn operation in the South East on Tuesday (May 17) resulted in the arrest of three men. Two men aged 61 and one aged 54, were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit fraud and possession of criminal property.

The following day two men, aged 51 and 40, from Gloucestershire were arrested during early morning operations on suspicion of conspiracy to commit aggravated burglary.

Today (Friday, May 20) following an early morning operation in the West Midlands, two men aged 58 and 63, were arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit fraud.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesman said: "The arrests form part of a detailed and on-going complex enquiry.
