Neighbours of the Isleport Industrial Estate in Highbridge were told to keep their doors and windows closed on Monday afternoon after concern over a chemical leak from a nearby factory.

Fire crews were called to the factory in Bolton Close just after 4pm after it was sealed off following a chemical leak.

Ambulance crews and police were also called to the scene as staff were evacuated from the premises.

Residents nearby were told to keep their doors and windows closed as a precaution.

Emergency services were at the scene until 9.30pm, with roads around the factory closed for three hours.

A fire and rescue spokesman said that the leak was of anhydrous ammonia from some pipework Anhydrous ammonia is a colorless, highly irritating gas with a sharp, suffocating smell.

Symptoms can include burning of the eyes, nose, and throat after breathing even small amounts and at higher doses, coughing or choking may occur. High levels of anhydrous ammonia can cause death.
