“Rain falls on Glastonbury” seems such an inevitable headline that there isn’t much point really writing it. Then again, don’t we all love watching those smug ballot-winning ticket holders getting their festival parade rained on?

Festival-envy issues aside, the warm sunshine of the past few days has indeed disappeared and intermittent rain came down. Which, of course, means wellies are being put to good use and those Somerset fields quickly turned to mud.

Despite the infamous Glastonbury weather, crowds still turned out in their thousands to watch Mary J Blige, Jungle, The Vaccines, Motorhead and Bastille – a last-minuted addition to the line-up – on the main stages.

But the rain hasn’t been Glasto’s only setback.

As the rain came down so did news that world-renowned physicist Professor Stephen Hawking cancelled his appearance at Glastonbury due to “personal reasons”.

The scientist, who has amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), had been due to appear at the Kidz Field.

A spokesman for Cambridge University said: “For personal reasons Stephen will not be able to visit Glastonbury this year.”

This follows another high-profile cancellation in the form of the Foo Fighters, who pulled out after frontman Dave Grohl suffered a leg injury a week before their scheduled appearance.

This meant Florence And The Machine have been bumped up to top billing tonight, leaving the supporting slot vacant.

However a secret act, widely tipped to be The Libertines, has been lined up to fill in on the Pyramid Stage.

What else happened on Glasto’s first day of music?

Yesterday morning, under a much bluer sky, campers cheered in the start of the tunes with surprise act The Charlatans.

Celebrities spotted enjoying the world-famous festival so far include One Direction members Niall Horan and Louis Tomlinson, actress and former girlfriend of Prince Harry Cressida Bonas and TV presenter Jonathan Ross.

Away from the live music, singer-turned-activist Charlotte Church, who has been in the anti-austerity movement, interviewed punk rock protesters Pussy Riot on top of an Army-style truck in front of a crowd of thousands.

Watch out, Kim’s in town!

Meanwhile Kim Kardashian West (as she goes by on Twitter these days) left this exciting message for her fans.

Surely that’s a hint she’s getting ready to support her husband Kanye West who will headline tomorrow night.

Hip-hop “messiah” Kanye will be soaking up the limelight on the Pyramid stage, a billing which was met with controversy including a petition with more than 130,000 signatures appealing for him to be replaced.

The Kardashian clan of sisters are often photographed together at festivals such as Coachella, while Kim, who is pregnant with the couple’s second baby, regularly supports her husband at gigs.

And what’s the forecast for today?

The weather is expected to be dry before more showers on Sunday.
