People all over the UK will be encouraged to make the most of the internet with the Be Online campaign, which takes place from 23 February - 8 March.

Somerset Libraries is getting involved with a number of events which will help people use the Internet to improve their skills, manage their health and live life to the full.

Libraries across Somerset will be offering free courses as part of the campaign in the three main categories: Stay Healthy, Find Work and Live Life. These courses will highlight the range of online resources available that can help people access anything from repeat prescriptions, new career opportunities and online shopping and money saving tips. Basic computing skills are required for these courses.

Five libraries will also be offering sessions for complete beginners, teaching basic mouse and keyboard skills, and supporting learners as they surf their first websites. No previous experience is required for the beginners’ courses.

Cllr David Hall, Somerset County Council’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for Libraries, said: “With more and more services accessible online, it is becoming increasingly important to have at least a basic understanding of computers and the internet. The Be Online campaign gives all people a chance to get up to speed with the Internet which is a great step towards ensuring that everyone has an equal opportunity to access all services available online.”

Somerset Libraries are UK Online Centre Partners and offer computer courses in 21 libraries for those who are unable to attend any of the courses taking place throughout the Be Online campaign.

These are flexible, free of charge, and offer learners the opportunity to get online for the first time, or improve their online skills. A list of participating libraries is available in all libraries, and can also be found at www.somerset.gov.uk/libraries-and-heritage/libraries-facilities/computer-courses-in-somerset-libraries/ or by phoning 0845 345 9177.
