DEVON & Somerset Fire & Rescue Service is reminding people to be aware of safety in their homes following the deaths of three people in separate fire incidents in recent days.

Chief Fire Officer Lee Howell said: “This is a very sad start to the New Year and our thoughts are with the family and friends of those involved.

“These tragic events should make us all think even harder about safety within our homes and the safety of our families and neighbours.

“Public safety is at the forefront of everything we do as a service and whilst we have increased the number of home fire safety checks and prevention work we undertake, we need everyone to recognise the dangers of fire and take some simple steps to improve personal safety and that of loved ones.

“Many of these fire deaths and injuries are preventable.”

Group manager Marc House, community safety prevention manager for the service, said: “Just two to three breaths of toxic smoke could leave you unconscious, so every second counts when escaping a fire and a working smoke alarm and knowing the escape plan in an emergency could make all the difference.

“If you have dependants or someone less able to care for themselves, it could take more time to get out, stay out and call 999.

“Make sure you’re always prepared, your exits are clear and everyone knows what to do in the event of a fire.

“Residents can help us to drive down fire deaths and injuries even further by taking a few simple steps to protect themselves and their families.”

The service is reminding people of the following general fire safety advice to stay safe.

•Make sure there is at least one smoke alarm on every level of your home and test them regularly.

•Make sure you’ve planned an escape route and think of any difficulties people may have and help they may need getting out, such as a torch to light their way or a stair rail.

•Check all your electrics regularly. Remember - one plug per socket. If you need more plugs than there are sockets, use a bar-type fuse adaptor.

•Take a moment to check on your loved ones who may need help to ensure they’re fully protected.

Investigations are continuing into all three incidents, which were.

•In the early hours of January 1, a man died in a flat in Plymouth.

•On January 8, a woman died in Woolsery, Bideford.

•Also on January 8, a man died in Yeovil.
