THE number of people aged over 100 in the UK has rocketed by 70% in a decade, official figures show.

The Office for National Statistics says there are now 13,780 centenarians.

The vast majority – 11,770 – are women.

It is estimated one in three children born today will reach 100.

And the rise has led the Department of Work and Pensions to increase its “centenarian staff”, who ensure congratulations cards and letters are sent to those reaching the landmark three figures.
