NEW gates to close flooded roads are to be introduced on the Somerset Levels and Moors to keep motorists safe.

Road Closure Gates will be installed at eight locations in an effort to stop vehicles driving through flood water and potentially getting stranded.

They will be used in place of temporary ‘road closed’ signs to make sure that closures are adhered to and drivers stay safe.

The gates will remain open until they are needed in times of flooding and will be secured with a combination padlock.

The gates will be accompanied by comprehensive diversions and signage, and drivers will have room to turn around and take an alternative route if they have not seen the diversion signs.

Cllr John Osman, leader of Somerset County Council and chairman of the Flood Action Plan’s Leaders Implementation Group, said: “These gates were one of the ideas that came from the communities affected by the winter flooding and I am delighted that we are able to respond to our residents’ views.

“While we cannot stop flooding, measures like this help reduce its impact and form just one part of the wider Flood Action Plan that is vital in helping to protect local communities from any future floods.”

Discussions between the council, Avon and Somerset Police and local parish councils will determine how the gates will be operated, with the local community expected to play a large part.

A combination padlock will secure the gates and neighbouring residents, landowners and the emergency services will be provided with the combination to allow access.

The gates are part of the Somerset Levels and Moors Flood Action Plan which is being delivered by a range of agencies, coordinated by Somerset County Council.

The plan will guide water and land management policies and investment on the Levels and Moors for the next 20 years.
