A great first year at North Petherton Primary School

North Petherton pupils and teachers came together to celebrate the end of their first successful year as a primary school.

The town's infant and junior schools amalgamated last September and a special assembly marked the achievements during the year.

The new school has earned two important awards, including the National Basic Skills Quality Mark for planning, teaching and assessment of English and maths.

Louise Chamberlain, head teacher at North Petherton, told the Mercury: “It was particularly pleasing in view of all the work that we have been doing to bring the two schools together, that the assessor found that there was a seamless approach to the teaching of literacy and numeracy across the school.”

The second award was the prestigious Arts Mark Gold Award for the teaching of the arts in school.

The awards were presented by Steve John, leading school improvement advisor at the time of amalgamation, and now head teacher at Sedgemoor Manor Junior School.

Mayor of North Petherton, Bill Revans, governors, members of the parent teacher association, and Ann Winter, head teacher of Robert Blake Science College, also attended the event.
