WEDMORE First School has raised £45,000 towards new green initiatives after an extensive fundraising drive.
Efforts from governors, staff and friends of the school will mean new installation energy saving technology will be installed to eventually generate up to 20% of the school's energy needs.
Seventy solar panels will be installed on the roof in February to help towards the school's aim of gaining silver Eco Schools status.
Wedmore also plans to use the internet to link with other sustainable schools throughout the South-West.
Head teacher Jackie Hipwell said: “This represents two important milestones for our school.
“The installation of the latest renewable energy system will allow us to save substantially on our energy bill, allowing us to spend more on educating our children.
“Thanks are due to our grants committee, which has done a magnificent job in tirelessly exploring every avenue of funding to secure the money we need to generate our own power.
“Teaching the children about the environment and the impact of global warming and climate change is part of the curriculum and we already encourage recycling and energy saving across the school.”
