Pupils at Somerset Bridge Primary School in Bridgwater donned hard hats when they visited the construction site of their new school.
House builder Persimmon Homes South-West invited the children and head teacher Phil Smithen to christen the site.
Mr Smithen dug a section of the foundations for the new school - which is due to open in September - and seven pupils gathered around to watch.
Mr Smithen said: “We all enjoyed seeing the location of what will be our new school and are looking forward to moving in and utilising our brand new facilities to the full.”
