PRIMARY school children in the Bridgwater area have proved that when it comes to getting to school, they really can walk the walk.
Ten schools took part in the Bridgwater Way to School Challenge in October, when they were challenged to walk, cycle or scoot to school.
In total, the schools racked up 4,205 miles, with North Newton Primary School’s 90 pupils coming out on top, having contributed 885 miles.
Their prize is a cycle-themed circus event at the school, including 70 wacky wheeled items for pupils to play with for the day.
David Gliddon, head teacher, said: "We are delighted to have won. The children were inspired and many of them walked, cycled and scooted throughout the whole of October.
“They're very much looking forward to the cycle circus visiting the school and will I'm sure have a fabulous time."
Harvey Siggs, Somerset county councillor responsible for highways and transport, said: “We were delighted at the number of schools that took part in the challenge and even more so to see the huge amount of effort the pupils went to to be more active on their journeys to school. “Well done to all.”
