Kids urged to take up fencing

SCHOOLCHILDREN are being encouraged to learn a new skill currently being taught at Bridgwater's Haygrove School.

The Sedgemoor Learning Alliance and Somerset Children's University have teamed up to launch a new fencing club for anyone aged six or over.

Coach James Perry, a highly qualified fencer and experienced international coach, is taking the sessions at Haygrove every Tuesday from 4pm and again from 5.30pm.

James said: “This is a wonderful opportunity for children and adults to come along and sample the sport for themselves.

“Come along and join us, or just drop in and see for yourself what the excitement is all about.”

Equipment and protective clothing is provided and training is given on all weapons including foil, epee, and sabre.

Jim added: “Juniors and adults are catered for in every option. Every aspect of the sport is available to the children.

“They are welcome to come along and discuss the opportunities available for anyone who thinks that they may like to train as a fully qualified coach in the art of fencing - or simply just for exercise and fun.

“You will also be offered the chance of joining the South-West club Excalibur International and taking part in competitions locally, throughout the UK and overseas if you wish to be serious about the sport.

“Fun, competition, exercise - the choice is yours.”
