Splash: Decision to be scrutinised

THE Splash swimming pool in Bridgwater has been given a tiny glimmer of hope after a plan was proposed to give it a stay of execution.

Sedgemoor District Council's executive committee voted last Monday to close the pool on August 30 but the opposition LibDem and Labour councillors have 'called in' the decision - meaning it will now go before a scrutiny committee for further discussion.

And Joe Leach, leader of the LibDems on Sedgemoor District Council, said: “What the LibDems are proposing is to keep the pool open until March to allow time to find a way for the community to fund the running of the pool until a new one is built.”

Monday's heated meeting saw the executive vote through the facility's early closure, despite coming under fire from disgruntled pool users who want the Splash to stay open.

Duncan McGinty, council leader, said the authority could not afford to keep the Splash open long term.

He told the meeting the money saved from an early closure would be used to help fund a new pool.

But angry pool users, who spoke passionately at the meeting, heckled and jeered councillors as the decision was voted through.

One of the speakers, Angela Tarr told councillors: “I find it incomprehensible that you would close the pool.”

lets hope this go's ahead and we can keep this swimming pool open as long as possible, thanks to the lib dems for taking the time trying to keep this pool open because the tories don't know how to help do they.we are all want to see this pool stay open it would be a great shame to close it.I think if we don't pay our council tax then the council will know we mean business then, they charge more for council tax every year and they start closing inportant places down.Good council we got isen't it, I DON'T THINK SO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I see on the news today that "Health Secretary Andy Burnham launched a new nationwide campaign to try to get more people interested in healthy eating to tackle obesity".
Yet at the same time there are "insufficient funds" to keep our leisure centres open. It absolutely beggars belief.

They promised us kids a skate park never happened. Like we will never get a new pool or hospital.

Having the pool at a school is a stupid idea with amount of traffic and kids will be heading in there when they should be in lessons. By using the money from building schools for the future it means the schools wont be as modern as they should be.

Taunton swimming pool and strode both have limited parking and personally i dont want be driving back from strode at 9pm so i can continue swimming on a regular basis

The district have a duty to promote health and well being within the area. Another poor decision by the management and councillors of SDC leaves bridgwater without a swimming pool. To go along with the lack of football pitches and general leisure facilites...
When are they going to listen to the public!!
Why haven't other sources of funding been explored to help with the funding of the Splash ???
