MORE than 200 Bridgwater Carnivalites transferred one of the town’s greatest traditions to the Olympic stage on Saturday night.

A record breaking 208 people, representing 17 Bridgwater carnival clubs and the town’s carnival committee, took part in a simultaneous squibbing display in Weymouth, as part of the climax to a three-day outdoor theatre event organised to celebrate the Olympic sailing events coming to the Dorset coast.

Saturday’s squibbing display, which formed part of the Battle of the Winds festival, was the first time the spectacle has been outside Bridgwater.

It was watched by thousands of people who lined Weymouth beach.

Dave Stokes, Bridgwater Carnival publicity officer, said: “The atmosphere was absolutely incredible and we are so proud to have been asked to take part in such a wonderful experience.

“This was a once in a lifetime opportunity, and we would like to thank Battle of the Winds and the people of Weymouth for making us feel so very welcome.”

The next squibbing display will be back in its traditional setting – at the end of Bridgwater Carnival – which this year takes place on Saturday, November 3.
