A 65-YEAR-OLD man has died and another man has been injured following a two vehicle collision in Woolavington this morning.

Police were called to the accident along the B3141 on the Causeway just after 7.30am and closed off the road both ways between The Crown Inn, East Huntspill, and Causeway Close, Woolavington.

A police spokesman said: “There was a two vehicle collision near Middlemoor Water Park. Both vehicles came to rest on opposite sides of the road in ditches.

“The driver of a silver VW Golf was able to get out of his car. He was taken to Musgrove Park Hospital with a head injury.

“The driver of a Mondeo, a 65-year-old man, died as a result of his injuries at the scene.”

The Mercury received reports at around 1pm that the road had reopened.

Police were allowing residents access to their homes along the road. Susan Clement, who lives near The Crown, said police had been turning cars away all morning.

She added: “My cousin’s daughter lives down there and had to cycle up the road to her mum who had to collect her from the other side because she didn’t think she could get past the closure.”

Keith Balch, owner of Crown Stores, East Huntspill, said customers had been asking him about the accident. He said: “Everybody wants to know what’s happened but people haven’t told me much about it.”

Middlemoor Water Park was closed off, although access to the site was allowed to people staying in its holiday accommodation.

Five classes which were due to take place at the park's swim school this morning had to be cancelled.

Police would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the collision, in particular anyone who may have seen the vehicle prior to the incident. Call the Collision Investigation Unit on 101.
