'Disruptive' protest planned at Hinkley Point

A DEMONSTRATION designed to disrupt the operation of Hinkley Point nuclear power station is being planned for next month.

Members of the Stop Hinkley pressure group will be joined by leading environmentalist Jonathan Porritt for the demonstration on Saturday, March 10.

The protest will involve campaigners, who are calling for a halt to the development of Hinkley Point C, link hands to form a chain around the existing power station.

The date of the protest has been chosen to coincide with the first anniversary of the Fukushima disaster in Japan. It will also feature a 24-hour blockade of the entrance.

Mr Porritt said: “We can achieve everything we need in terms of secure, low-carbon energy primarily from energy efficiency, renewables and modern technologies like combined heat and power.

“I believe we can still persuade UK citizens that 'new nuclear' is the wrong thing for us to be doing.”

A Japanese couple who fled their home after the Fukushima disaster will be speaking at the Hinkley protest to explain how their life has been changed since the incident, when a tsunami caused a full-scale nuclear alert.

A spokesman for EDF Energy, which runs and operates Hinkley Point, said: “We respect the rights of individuals to peaceful protest. We are also sympathetic to the pressure these events can place on the local community with whom we have strong links.

“The safety of the public, our people and our plant is top priority. This will not change during the protest. We hope the protestors will respond positively to the efforts we have made to facilitate a peaceful and lawful protest and be mindful of our neighbours and our role in supplying low carbon electricity to over a million homes.”

Ahh the great unwashed airing their grievances with a 'all hands together' around the exisiting site. I have never been to the site but assume its quite big, How many supporters are they expecting to form this chain? I wish I could afford to take time off work to 'Protest' or are us workers paying their benefit payments, I guess we are

10th is a Saturday so those who turn up could well have jobs.

I may not agree with all their aims and beliefs but I do respect their right to protest and make a stand for what they believe. I will probably walk over there to see the protest and chat with some of them.

Cupra, the right to protest, yes I agree, but some of these folk are already camping out there, in areas they shouldnt be, and not protesting but causing as many problems (legally or not) , as they can. I guess they will be there for some time too, not just on the saturday when those with a genuine grievance will be. The problem is that certain elements of society see this as a conduit to cause mayhem in the name of protest. I would also bet my last sovereign that the site will become another Twyford down, full of what were labelled 'new age travellers' and the carnage that caused

New Aged Travellers - Hedge Monkeys - Soap Dodgers, all boils down to the same thing. They're obviously not working or available for work, yet still expect their weekly handouts from the state.

I don't think protest makes an ounce of difference these days. As if a few hippies holding hands is going to make them turn round and say "Do you know what? I think we are doing the wrong thing."
Gives them all a day out though I suppose...

I do chuckle at the so called environmentalist hippies.
They protest at things like this that will be sorely needed when the oil dries up and we need UK power sources when we are held to ransom by the importing of gas and electricity from overseas.
The funny thing is the mess they make. Did you see on the news the aftermath of all the "occupy-things" people? The mess left behind was hardly a good example set by these so called "earth friends".
Personally I can't see how holding hands will make EDF change their plans, but as flick said, it gives them something else to do other than sit about chanting, smoking pot and stinking the place out with patchouli and B.O....
