WESTOVER Ward councillors and the pressure group Bridgwater Forward are backing the Mercury campaign to bring a permanent Post Office back to the town.

Councillors Brian Smedley and Kathy Pearce have called for the Post Office to take urgent action to find a more 'suitable facility'.

In a letter to Matthew Walls, the field change adviser for the Post Office, they wrote: “Frustration and anger is increasing in the town over the current provision. We would therefore appreciate an assurance that Bridgwater will soon have a more suitable facility, which is adequate to meet the needs of local people.

“Accordingly, we would ask you to now assure us that action will immediately be taken to remedy the situation and that you give us a timescale for when this could be achieved.”

Westover Ward Town Cllr Steve Austen added: “I feel that the length of time this is taking is totally destructive for our beleaguered High Street.”

The campaign 'Time to Deliver' was launched earlier this month and has already collected pages of signatures on petition sheets and via our online Facebook group.

The people of Bridgwater are currently forced to buy their stamps and collect their pensions from a temporary static caravan in a featureless car park in Northgate. Residents have complained it is stuffy and regularly has long queues.

A Post Office spokesman said: “We are actively pursuing a permanent solution. Mr Walls will respond to the councillors.”

Really whats the point, the council wont be happy until everything has gone from the town. The only way anything is done round here is if someone pays big money to SDC then doors will open everywhere.
