THIS photo was brought in by Patricia Baker, 69, who is a young child at the far right in the arms of her aunt Mera Osborn. The photo was taken in 1945 when a party was held to celebrate the end of World War II. Residents from Bailey Street and Bath Road came together to mark the occasion.

Ten years ago February 12, 2002 TEACHERS and pupils in Bridgwater had plenty to celebrate after education chiefs handed technology college status to Chilton Trinity School.

It was set to receive its first £100,000 grant as it became a prestigious centre for educational technology.

School staff were delighted with the successful bid and thanked parents and local businesses for helping to raise the £50,000 sponsorship needed to support the school.

PRAYERS were said at churches across Sedgemoor in memory of Princess Margaret, who died at the weekend.

Well-wishers paid tribute to the 71-year-old and prayers were also said for members of the Royal family.

Twenty years ago February 11, 1992 THREE employees of a wealthy farmer from Spaxton spoke of their disappointment after being left just £1,000 each in his will.

The paper reported how Bill Geen left much of his £1million fortune to charities and other organisations in and around Spaxton.

OFFICERS from Nuclear Electric rebuffed suggestions that the Hinkley Point power station was at risk of flooding due to global warming this week in 1992.

Nuclear Electric spokesman Julian Curtis said the plant was 'unaffected' by the possibility of rising sea levels.

Thirty years ago February 16, 1982 A MAN from Westonzoyland was anxiously waiting to hear whether an insurance claim would go through after his cottage collapsed. Timothy Marks told the Mercury his home had fallen down in storms and had to be shored up council workmen.

He said: “I am having to try and prove to the insurance company why it fell down.”

DEVELOPERS of the new Angel Place Shopping Centre were considering how to keep it free from muggers and vandals this week thirty years ago.

At a meeting to discuss the issue, Sergeant Bill Williams said: “The possibility of sealing off the precinct at the end of the working day is being considered.”
