New Post Office opens in Bridgwater today

Terry Brown Terry Brown

A BRIDGWATER Post Office has been opened this week thanks to Government investment to improve the community service.

A branch has opened at the Woodbury Road/Dunkery Road stores today as part of a bid to improve the network.

The revitalisation programme is expected to introduce longer opening hours, simplified face-to-face service and refurbished branches.

Store owner and sub postmaster Terry Brown said: “We haven’t had a Post Office here for three years. We bought the property about seven months ago and I’m happy about it as I think it will draw people in.

“We will be able to offer a service here after others are closed – we believe there are no other Post Officers open earlier or later in the area.”

The Post Office will be opened from 9am this week, with hours extended to 7.30am to 8pm as of next week.

The refurbishment is part of a 1.3bn Government investment programme and developments are expected to start in June – with further details due to be available at this time.

Post Office Limited spokesperson Mike Norman said: “This is very good news for the High Street in that the investment keeps products and service at the heart of communities across the UK.”

He added it was not yet known which post offices would benefit from the programme and that an announcement was expected to be made in June or July.

How long is that temporary little box called a Post Office going to be around ? Bon Marche and Peacocks could be moving out so more large shops the original shop which the post office was in is still empty why have we still got a " temporary " post office ? or have we had the wool pulled over our eyes by the council again and the " temporary " post office is there to stay ?

One of the reasons Post Offices have closed is that the Post Office started paying Postmasters less money per transaction. At the same time the government made pension and benefit claiments receive their payments directly into their bank accounts. These two things combined made postmasters think the job was no longer worth the candle. This has had a disastrous affect on local communities.I believe that improving the lot of Post Offices and postmasters would be a good thing for society. This improvement would come in the form of higher pay for postmasters and more transactions at the Post Office counter.I would also re~open Post Offices in villages, suburbs and town centres as a matter of urgency.

Good points but they have also seen a downturn in the amount of parcels etc being sent through them purely down to pricing.

I sent a package last week by Courier next day for £8.95, I had taken it into the Post office and they wanted £18+

These new 'Post Office Locals' are basic post offices that cannot offer the same range of transactions a traditional PO can. They are run as a bolt-on to another commercial business and are designed to run on the same counter. However rather than bring in extra customers they could actually have a detrimental effect on the more profitable retail part of the business as those who for example are popping into pick up their morning paper and pint of milk are not going to be impressed standing in a queue behind an early morning ebayer posting of ten packets of varying requirements to different destinations! These new style offices are going to be rolled out across the country in a bid to keep the PO network up to the required level. But they will not enjoy the same level of back office support and customers will not be guaranteed the usual range of available transactions as well as experience, knowledge and security currently provided by the traditional dedicated offices. It is a 'dilution' of the brand and will change the concept of PO's in the future across the country.
Sheldoncooper whilst some couriers nay offer a cheaper service be aware that the levels of compensation in the event of loss/ damage offered for items may differ. PO's can offer different services on behalf of Royal Mail and ParcelForce dependant on the items size, weight, urgency, value, and if the customer requires a signature on delivery, consequential loss cover. There is also the quality of service as no Package sent via these services will be left on a doorstep if there is no one available to accept delivery. I have personally had packages nicked from my doorstep when left there by a courier!
A good postoffice will ensure that you are offered the postal service best suited for your needs.

Have to disagree with you there.

As a business user I have had the misfortune of trying to claim for a number of lost packages through Royal Mail, who used every delaying tactic going in the hope that I would give up.

Eventually we did get compensated but only at the cost price of the item and not the retail price ( which a private individual would ).

We have had packages accepted at the Post office counter for Parcelforce and Royal Mail, only to have them returned days later for being too big ( in 1 case by 1 centimetre).

We have used the same Courier for 3 years and never had a package go missing. Our packages weigh upto 30 kilos ( which Parcelforce will not take ) with 98% arriving next day, and all require a signature so cannot be left on the doorstep. Their optional levels of compensation are clearly stated, as is their list of prohibited items.

Package sent to USA 3 weeks ago, with Parcelforce would have been £128. Sent by Fedex for £55 and arrived inside 3 days with full online stage by stage tracking. No comparison i'm afraid .

There is a booklet which should be available in all PO's giving Parcelforce's terms and conditions of acceptance. The naximum weight for an inland item is 30kg with a maximum length of 1.5m and 3m length / girth combined. It is down to the Counter Staff if they accepted a package that didn't meet the criteria.
Of course the only compensation you receive is for the loss you actually personally incurred which is the price you paid for the item not what you have 'sold' it for. If you claimed your 'sell' price you would be making a profit on it at Royal Mails expense. This is no different whether it be a private or business customer.Terms and conditions for Royal Mail and ParcelForce and compensation limits are freely available in booklets which if not on display can always be asked for. It must be noted that Royal Mail and ParcelForce are obliged To offer a 'Universal Service' which means they gave to charge the same price whether the item is going to London or the Outer Hebrides.
Most couriers 'cherry pick' the profitable routes and surcharge for remote areas .
They do not operate on a level playing field.
Few offer any refund if the item doesn't arrive on a stated day, and often their compensation limits are set at a maximum amount per kilo / consignment.
It's swings and roundabouts what works for some doesn't work for others - just remember it wasn't ParcelForce that stored their overspill of parcels outside in the snow for two weeks last year!
