Response to fly-tipping in Somerset Levels

Response to fly-tipping in Somerset Levels Response to fly-tipping in Somerset Levels

THE managing director of Somerset Waste Partnership has responded to complaints over fly-tipping in the countryside.

Earlier this week the Mercury reported that rubbish was founded dumped in the Somerset Levels.

Now Steve Read has clarified that while only four of the county’s 18 recycling sites charge a £2 entry fee, there is a charge to dump some materials.

He said: “At all 18 recycling sites up to 30 different materials – including domestic appliances and furniture – and refuse can be deposited at no cost.

“Four materials classified as non-household have charges starting at £2.90: soil, hardcore, gas bottles and tyres. Of course, 10 materials are collected free at the kerbside from almost all homes.”

He said the fees helped prevent closure and added there was no excuse for the ‘crime of fly-tipping’.

Earlier this week, David Davies, member of the Somerset Levellers cycle group which regularly passed through the area, slammed people who dropped their litter there.

He said their actions spoiled it for people like him who enjoy the scenery.

• Full details, including information for businesses about recycling and plenty of alternative ways to reduce waste and save money, are on the Somerset Waste Partnership website at www.somersetwaste.gov.uk. Fly-tipping should be reported to Sedgemoor District Council.

Hmmm.... all the responses seem to talk around the issue of whether there has been an increase in incidences of fly tipping or not, since charges were introduced.

I feel a FOI request coming on....

Exactly the point several of us made in posts against the original article.
It is fine for Steve Read to continually list the services offered. But does he or does he not acknowledge that fly tipping has increased ?
Once he answers this question, then the debate on why becomes more relevant.
