A VITAL new support service for children with autism and their families has been launched in Bridgwater.
The Autism Research Centre was set up by Katherine Swan, whose son Zack was diagnosed with the condition following the death of his older sister in 2007.
Around 70 people from all over the county, including Sedgemoor District Council chairman Jane Moreton, attended the launch day at Sydenham Family Centre.
Katherine said: “It went brilliantly and I felt really proud to get such positive feedback from parents in a similar position to me who just need some help.
“I also feel a bit angry that the service we are looking to provide isn't already on offer but it is exciting to get to the point we are at now.”
Katherine says the group has applied for £350,000 of funding over the next five years from the National Lottery and is looking for a permanent building to base itself in.
But there is already £10,000 worth of sensory equipment in place to lend to parents with autistic children when they need it.
When it is fully up and running, the centre will be open mornings and afternoons and holding regular clubs for autistic children and their families.
If anyone has or knows of a building available at reasonable rates for the group to hire, or to find out more about the centre, contact Katherine on 01278-431666 or 07833-510212.
