THE manager of Bridgwater's Sydenham Family Centre enjoyed a “once in a lifetime” experience when the Queen presented her with an MBE.

Dr Jas Jutley-Plested, who lives in Burnham, was honoured at Windsor Castle where she received the award for her services to young children and their families.

She told the Mercury: “I went to Windsor with my husband and our two children and I wore a beautiful red and black sari my brothers bought for me so they could be there in spirit.

“Windsor Castle was such a magnificent building and as I waited for the Queen to present me with my award I was amazed I wasn't feeling nervous at all.

“When I spoke to her it seemed like there was no-one else in the room and she has such an amazing presence about her. She asked me about my work and congratulated me.

“The whole experience was unforgettable and I will cherish it for the rest of my life. It really was a once in a lifetime opportunity.”

Jas has led the provision of local parent support services and has been part of a successful child health promotion pilot.
