Hinkley C not needed, says environmentalist

HINKLEY C is not needed, a meeting of anti-nuclear campaigners was told this week.

Environmentalist Jonathon Porritt told a meeting of Stop Hinkley campaigners in Taunton: “It would be totally wrong to impose on future generations a problem for which we have no solution.

“We don’t know how to deal with nuclear waste.”

We still need to find ways of generating additional power in the future, so this guy reckons that nuclear is not the way to go... however I bet when you start talking about tidal barrages and windfarms (on or offshore) he would oppose those as well, for destroying areas of natural beauty. I understand the risks of nuclear however if we wish to continue to live in the way in which we are accustomed, we need to do something...

We certainly do need to do something, as we face the twin problems of climate change and energy security. Without a doubt, that something is not new nuclear build. New nuclear power stations simply could not be built in time to take conventional, high-carbon generation out of the system and reduce our carbon emissions on the scale that is needed. We need to act now to reduce our carbon emissions, and the best way of doing that is to concentrate our efforts on improving energy efficiency and developing renewables. Of course tidal barrages are contentious, but the clever schemes currently being developed (some of which have recently been given the go-ahead off the coast of Scotland), mean that we could have the clean energy tidal power offers whilst minimising environmental damage.
