Dad hurt in 'hit and run'

A BRIDGWATER man remains seriously injured in hospital after he was the victim of an alleged hit and run by a suspected drink-driver.

Father-of-two Matthew Ryder, 40, of Chilton Trinity, suffered a fractured skull and broken ribs after his bicycle was in collision with a Fiat van on Wylds Road.

After a scan at Musgrove Park Hospital in Taunton, he was transferred to Frenchay Hospital, Bristol, where he went straight into theatre and had two blood clots removed from his brain.

His wife, Jackie, told the Mercury the whole family was left in a state of shock following the incident, which happened outside Rivers House shortly before 7am last Monday.

She said: “I heard on the radio that there had been an accident and when the police told me it was Matthew my head was all over the place. It was awful.”

Jackie said Matthew had now regained consciousness and was making progress.

She said: “It was a relief that he knew who I was when he woke up but he can’t remember anything about the accident.

“He keeps asking what happened, how it happened and why it happened to him. He wants answers.”

A 36-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of drink-driving and failing to stop at the scene of an accident. He has been released on bail.

Anyone with information about the incident should call police on 0845-4567000.

The "alleged" drink driver should get a 10 year sentence without remission.
Let's stop the ****-footing and start giving REAL sentences out.

They should lock the driver up and throw away the key. How is this young getting on ? I hope he soon makes a good recovery and can enjoy life again.

Drivers that drink and drive should be given full publicity so that law abiding Bridgwater people can be vigilant and keep an eye out for them. They should really be banned from the moment they take the breathalyser who know's what can happen when they are waiting to go to court.
