Bridgwater students get Princess Di award

SUCCESSFUL students at East Bridgwater Community School in Bridgwater have been honoured with a special Princess Diana Anti-Bullying Award.

Year nine peer mediators, who help look after younger pupils at the school, scooped the prestigious trophy for the second year running after the awarding committee said East Bridgwater provided a very strong nomination with the “wow” factor they were looking for.

The Bridgwater school also got the backing of Princess Diana’s brother Earl Spencer, peer mediation patron, on receiving the award.

He said: “Diana first made her mark at school, when her caring nature for younger or more timid girls was recognised with a unique award, given to her by the headmistress.

“Diana had no time for bullies, and she naturally championed the underdog. My very first day at school, in fact, when I was just four, Diana was allowed by our headmistress to come to check that I was all right, because my sister would not settle till she had put her mind at rest on that point.

“It’s so very right that her memory is preserved today by schools such as East Bridgewater Community School, with anti-bullying initiatives.”

The school also congratulated the pupils on their award-winning efforts.
