Council approves early Splash closure

SEDGEMOOR district councillors today rubber-stamped the early closure of the Splash in Bridgwater – despite passionate opposition from the public.

At a meeting in Bridgwater House, councillors passed a recommendation made by the executive last month to close the pool early and plough the savings into a new pool at Chilton Trinity.

Around 70 members of the public attended the meeting and 18 people spoke in vain to keep the Splash open.

For a full report of today’s meeting, read next Tuesday’s Mercury.

This is discusting news. Were always being encouraged to loose weight and keep healthy. Most of the schools in Bridgwater and surrounding areas use the Splash.
Now this facility has gone more schools are going to have to use buses and take double the time out of the School day to be able to access a pool further away.
It really does make me wonder why we bother to go to work and pay our taxes.Where exactly is our money going????

Very few sports receive a council subsidy so why should swimming be any different?.

I have to ask - what is the point of a Councillor if they are not executing the peasants' wishes? It would seem the Council has done what it sees fit, regardless of anyone's view. Reminds me of the Lido fiasco many years back. And that turned out to be pandering to a supermarket chain against the wishes of the townspeople.

And the decision to update the Town Hall at the same time as axing the Splash is frankly absurd.

I for one do not support the Town Council, as it appears to do NOTHING for the town.

It's obvious why, tesco's are paying big money to come here just like what happened with the lido,we do not need another supermarket but it is going to happen so i don't know why it will take so long for them to build a new swimming bath's as it's probably already signed and sealed.I guess the council are dipping into the money pot already for there expenses!!!

I COULDNT AGREE MORE WITH BRIAN 21.TESCO'S WILL PAY MONEY UPFRONT SO WHY NOT USE THIS TO START THE NEW POOL THEN THERE WONT BE SUCH A DELAY IN GETTING IT FINISHED.

The questions that we are have to go to ask now are what members of the council are going to benefit from the building of a supermarket ? Somewhere along the line large amounts of money are going to line the pockets of our elected members and the new pool will never be built, whatever they say !!

These councillors wont live next to the new needless supermarket and the building site and disruption that it will cause.

The load on the already busy surrounding streets for parking will only get worse.

RIP Bridgwater, it has just banged the last nail into its own coffin !!!
