Fear after flat fire

A BRIDGWATER woman has opened up to the Mercury about the daily struggles she faces after a fire ravaged her home.

The West Street flat of 73-year-old Heather Taylor was scorched during a late-night blaze on July 23, destroying the contents of one room and leaving smoke damage in the rest.

Heather told the Mercury that the fire started accidentally after a lit cigarette fell and the room went up in flames.

Heather, who struggles with asthma, arthritis and a bad knee, said: “I have to sleep downstairs on the settee because there is smoke in my bedroom, which irritates my asthma.

“I've cleaned as much as I can, but the whole place needs redecorating and I can't do it all myself.”

The fire damage is not covered under her tenancy agreement with Homes in Sedgemoor, and as she has no contents insurance, Heather has been left to replace items and decorations destroyed by the fire.

Ann Philcox, housing director for Homes in Sedgemoor, said: “We have spoken to Mrs Taylor on numerous occasions so she is fully aware of the circumstances.

“If someone has no contents insurance, we will do the work for them, but would have to recharge the cost as we use tenants' money.”

Darryl Taylor, Heather's son, said: “I just cannot believe it, there is no compassion. She's a 73-year-old woman who is not getting any younger, has problems with mobility and Homes in Sedgemoor told her she has to sort it out herself.

“She is anxious and frustration is piling up on her.”

Did I read this right? Heather is spending her money on cigarettes instead of insurance and now wants other residents to pay for her flat to be repaired.

Why not get your son to repair it or save your fag money and pay for a decorator?

The nerve of some people.

Hum indeed!

Smoking in bed!! Why should we feel compassion.
I pay my house insurance ,why should other people be responsible for her irresponsibility!!

OK, first why on earth was someone smoking in bed!!!! how many years of safety warnings are needed to prevent this sort of occurrence. Might as well left a chip pan on as well. Second, I pay council tax and am happy to support people in housing but not with events caused by stupidity.

Homes in sedgemoor will do the work, lucky her; if i had spend my cash on fags on not insurance i would have to seek tradesmen and manage the repairs.... And i bet she gets a fair repayment plan...

Poor thing!!!!!!

I am sorry but isnt smoking harmfull even if you dont have asthma ? and as for smoking in bed may as well buy a gun and do the job right, or even better stop smoking and buy house insurance its cheaper(honest)

I dont mean to go all CSI, but 1)Did she light it with a blow torch? 2)How come her hair/head are intact? 3)If the bedding was to be removed, the windows opened, the smell of smoke may go. PS; Im not completely heartless.I have some paint if you would like it Mrs Taylor.
