AFTER four years of research and graft author Jane Mann (nee Penfold) has published a new book documenting the history of Bridgwater’s boozers.

Jane’s labour of love has seen her compile information and pictures from across the greater Bridgwater area for the new book which was launched at the Blake Museum on Saturday, April 6.

The book includes histories of the area’s favourite public houses from Bridgwater, Cannington, Puriton, Highbridge, Burnham, Nether Stowey, North Petherton and anywhere out on the moors, down on the Levels, lost in the folds of the Quantocks or perched high up on the Poldens.

Former carer Mrs Mann said she had the idea for the book after working with people with dementia, and wanted to create something that might help bring back memories.

She said: “I’ve worked in care for many years and the women tend to have much to talk about from their pasts. Men in particular often have their memories of pubs and where they used to socialise.

“I thought a history of the town’s pubs would be a good project as Bridgwater is famous for its pubs but so many have disappeared.”

Her husband Colin has helped with research for the book.

She said the museum has been very helpful and that part of any money made will go to support the museum.

Copies of the new book, 'Bridgwater and Beyond: Pubs, clubs and inns, past and present', are available from the Blake Museum.
