A MAN has died after he was cut free from a car which was involved in a crash in Somerset.

Emergency services rushed to the scene on A361 in Burrowbridge shortly before 9.50am after reports of a two-car collision.

Fire crews confirmed that one vehicle had left the road and a man was 'severely trapped' inside the car.

Shortly before 11am fire crews confirmed they had released the man and he was now in the care of an air ambulance and paramedics which had arrived at the incident.

However, the man did not survive the crash and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A spokesman for the police said: "We were called at 9.47am to a collision involving two vehicles. One vehicle had left the road, and an air ambulance was called. Sadly, a man died at the scene.

The road is still closed in both directions while we recover the vehicles."

A spokesman for South Western Ambulance Service said crews attended with two ambulances, an operations officer and a doctor.

An air ambulance was also flown to the scene.

The carriageways are blocked between School Lane and Northmoor Lane, in Lyng.

The fire service also confirmed that they were called to the crash.

A spokesman said: "Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service received a call from police reporting a road traffic collision at the above location.

"Fire control immediately mobilised one fire appliance from Taunton, one fire appliance from Bridgwater and a duty officer to attend this incident.

"Further information was received that a vehicle had left the carriageway. As a result of this, the incident commander requested the heavy rescue tender from Taunton to be mobilised to the incident.

"On arrival the officer in charge confirmed this was a two vehicle road traffic collision with one male severely trapped in one of the vehicles.

"The crews got to work using hydraulic cutting equipment. The road has been closed in both directions."

The road remains closed for the time being as police recover the vehicles involved.

The spokesman said they did not currently know when A361 will be open again.
