A SUSPECTED arson attack has left the porch of a Bridgwater property badly damaged by fire and smoke.

Firefighters rushed to the scene in Old Taunton Road shortly at around 11.55pm yesterday (March 8) after reports that an alarm had activated at a residential property.

When the fire crew arrived, the officer in charge confirmed there was a fire in the porch at the property that is believed to have been started deliberately.

A spokesman for Avon and Somerset Police said: "We were called out at 12.13am on March 9 to a property on Old Taunton Road to reports of criminal damage.

"The fire service were already on the scene, and they confirmed to us they believed it was deliberate ignition.

An investigation is underway. If anyone has any information that may be able to help us, call 101 with reference number 5218050803."

Crews used breathing apparatus and a CO2 extinguisher to put out the fire and used a pressure ventilation fan to ventilate the property.

The fire caused approximately 80 per cent damage to the letterbox, 20 per cent damage to the door and 80 per cent smoke damage to the property.
