A FLOOD barrier has been put up in Bridgwater as the South West braces itself for harsh winds and high tides.

Sedgemoor District Council has installed the flood barrier in Blake Gardens as 'a precautionary measure' as high tides and harsh winds are predicted as Storm Eleanor is set to hit Somerset.

A spokesman for Sedgemoor District Council, said: "In advance of predicted high tides and weather warnings over the coming few days, Sedgemoor District Council has installed the flood barrier in Blake Gardens.

"This is a precautionary measure to make sure that the homes in St Saviours Avenue are protected.

"The barrier will be removed on January 5."

Residents across Somerset are being warned to brace themselves as a 'yellow' warning for wind from the Met Office will be in place between 00.05am and 10pm on Wednesday.

The Met Office said on its website: “Strong and at times gusty winds are expected through much of Wednesday.

"Combined with a period of high tides, it's likely that some coastal communities and routes will be affected by spray and large waves, whilst there is a small chance that injuries and danger to life could occur from large waves and beach material being thrown on to sea fronts, roads and coastal properties, along western and southern coasts.

"There is a small chance of injuries and danger to life, as well as minor property damage, from flying debris.

"There is a small chance of transport delays, route and bridge closures, and cancellations to public transport.

"As well as this, there is a small chance of disruption to power and other services.”

A 'red' weather warning is also in place for Porlock Weir and residents have been warned immediate action is likely to be required.

Sedgemoor District Council have said the barrier will be removed on January 5.
