FIREFIGHTERS came to the rescue of a puppy after it fell into a rhyne and couldn't get out.

Crews were called to the incident after the dog's owner called the fire and rescue service at around 10.30am today (Saturday).

The animal was in the water-filled ditch at Westonzoyland Airfield, in Burdenham Drove.

Two fire engines from Bridgwater, the special rescue team from Exmouth and an officer were mobilised to the scene, where the puppy was up to its waist in water.

A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "Crews from Bridgwater donned crew savers - life jackets - and climbed down into the rhyne using a triple extension ladder to rescue the puppy.

"The puppy was rescued by two crew members and left in the care of the owner, uninjured."
