RUBBISH artists only have one day left to enter their submission into The Turnip Prize.

The Turnip Prize is a spoof UK award satirising the Tate Gallery’s Turner Prize by rewarding deliberately bad modern art.

The brainchild of Trevor Prideaux, landlord of The New Inn at Wedmore, The Turnip Prize has gained something of a cult following since it was first held in 1999.

Entries opened on November 1 and close tomorrow (Tuesday, Nov 21).

Credit is given for entries containing bad puns as titles, displaying ‘lack of effort’ or ‘being rubbish’.

Conversely, entries with ‘too much effort’ or ‘not rubbish enough’ are immediately disqualified. The first prize is a turnip nailed to a block of wood.

The 2016 winner was 69-year-old Mr Plumskey for his work entitled ‘Pole Dark’ (A Black Pole).

Last year the Turnip Prize attracted a total of 99 entries, and Mr Prideaux hopes he can top that this year.

To enter the competition

Ring Trevor on 01934 710004 or 07812 848011, or you can leave your entry with staff at The New Inn, Combe Batch, Wedmore, Somerset BS28 4DU.

Those taking part are required to leave their name or pseudonym and a contact phone number, and the closing date for entries is Tuesday, November 21.

The final judging will take place on Tuesday, December 5 at 6.30pm where the winner will be announced.
