PLANS have been submitted to try and convert Bridgwater's Old Hospital into a new hotel and restaurant for the town centre.

If the application goes through the Grade II listed former hospital site on Salmon Parade would become home to a hotel, restaurant, health club and gym as well as a day nursery.

The applicants, Salmon Parade Developments Ltd, say this would bring a 'significant attraction' to the southern edge of the Eastover Triangle which will help regenerate the area.

The new layout will also provide 70 car spaces, and the plan also involves demolishing the outpatient building as well as part of the dentist surgery.

The Old Hospital is outlined in Sedgemoor District Council's 'Bridgwater Vision' as well as an Eastover planning document.

The 47,000sqft site is surrounded mainly by shops and businesses with a residential development to the south.

The NHS sold the hospital to a local developer for £1.6m back in January, with the hospital having been closed and replaced with the Bridgwater Community Hospital in 2014.
