THOUSANDS of people descended on St Matthew’s Field for this year’s Bridgwater Fair.

There were dozens of colourful rides, from carousels for children, to rides that flung you more than 100ft in the air for the braver attendees.

People came from far and wide to enjoy the waltzers, helter skelter, Ferris Wheel, and various fairground rides.

There was also the ever-popular street market filled with all sorts of foods from curries, to Welsh pancakes to Candy Floss, while other stalls included fortune tellers, toys and art.

The four-day event was opened on Wednesday by the mayor of Bridgwater, Graham Granter, and chairman of Sedgemoor District Council, Mike Cresswell.

The fair provided fun for all the family with fun houses, water-zorbing, bouncy castles and more for the little ones to enjoy.

In addition to organising the two markets, Sedgemoor District Council also funds public conveniences, first aid, night-time security and generators as well as inspecting the many food stalls selling traditional goodies.

The council has been working to clear the site following the festivities.
The giant fair which survives today dates back to 1249, and organisers are already anticipating next year’s event.
