FIREFIGHTERS struggled to get to a fire that was causing large volumes of smoke to issue from a shop.

Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue engines were called to Cricketer Farm, Cannington Road, Nether Stowey, at around 11.54am yesterday (Sunday, September 11).

A host of engines from across the area came to assist with the fire.

Large amounts of smoke was issuing from the roof. Firefighters used two hose reel jets and one main jet in an attempt to protect the surrounding properties.

Crews had to remove roofing and tiles using an aerial ladder in order to gain access to the fire.

An hour and a half later, crews were using four breathing apparatus wearers are two roofing ladders to extinguish the fire.

It is not yet known what was the cause of the fire or the extent of damage to the shop.
