BRIDGWATER'S Trinity Sports and Leisure has been nominated for a public health award for its positive attitude towards breastfeeding on the site.

Somerset County Council is campaigning to promote breastfeeding, and the 1610 Leisure Centre is up for a Somerset Positive About Breastfeeding Award following positive feedback about its approach to the issue.

The award is given to venues that have made a significant commitment to uphold the rights of mothers by supporting their choice to feed their baby how and wherever they choose.

Assistant general manager for Trinity Sports and Leisure Chris Skidmore said "We are very proud to receive this nomination as we do our utmost to make it a welcoming place for families.

"Breastfeeding can be a sensitive issue and it is important that mums and families feel happy about feeding their babies in a relaxed, family friendly atmosphere.”

Bridgwater mum Kirsty Darlington, who takes baby son Harry to the Trinity cafe, said the centre put mums at ease.

“I feel comfortable and confident breastfeeding in the café, I really like how it is laid out with the soft seating and TV's. It puts a lot of mums, especially new mums at ease as there are a number of mums feeding in the café after their baby’s swimming lessons. Also it is a great place to make new friends and socialise.“

Councillor Christine Lawrence, cabinet member for public health and wellbeing at Somerset County Council, said: "The award tells all families with young infants that there is a warm welcome waiting for them. It is important that we do everything possible to assist women to breastfeed in public areas. I would encourage other organisations and public places to join up to the scheme.”
