BRIDGWATER'S iconic St Mary's Church is looking resplendent after re-opening following a £1 million revamp.

The historic landmark in the centre of town had been closed for just over a year before opening its doors to the public once again.

Church warden Adrian Patten said he was delighted with the final result.

"It is looking fantastic, we have had a few services and a wedding, even our first baptism yesterday and everyone has been really positive," he said.

The pews have been taken out, with some put back in pristine condition, while the new floor plan creates a more 'flexible' space in the centre of the church.

"Next week we will have the school leavers service for St Mary's Primary School which will test the new setting when the church is full," Mr Patten said.

"Lots of people have been popping in for a look, and we have had positive comments about how the pews now look, and are really impressed with the changes we have made to the ceiling," he added.

Complications were added to the project when a number of vaults were found underneath the floor which led to to price of the project going up by £130,000.

Mr Patten also explained that there was a special Celebration Service being lined up for Saturday, November 11 at 2pm when the Bishop Peter Hancock will be visiting and there will be lots of family entertainment including stilt walkers.

If you want to go in and check out the changes, the church is open Tuesday to Friday from 10am to 4pm, on Saturdays from 10am to 2pm and on Sundays for services up until 1pm.
