By the time you read this in the paper everything will be back to normal with me spouting my usual brand of rubbish in between, some admittedly great, songs if you are up and about bright and early.

At the time of writing though we, that’s me along with Mrs Dave, are sat in a quiet little cottage in the middle of nowhere enjoying the sounds of nature.

There are virtually no cars (1 or 2 a day at most), very few people and no street lights meaning at night you can’t see your hand in front of your face without any lights on. Where are we? Surprisingly it’s not Somerset Bridge. For the first time ever we are up in the Lake District, somewhere between Coniston and Windermere in a place that looks remarkably like Greendale.

We keep expecting to see a certain postman and his cat out on their daily rounds but sadly the real postie looked nothing like him, and there wasn’t a feline friend to be seen.

We’ve done the usual touristy things of visiting the lakes and even going out on a cruise around one of them. A little tip for you if you are ever up in the area. Windermere is the most famous and, of course, the biggest of the lakes.

However, that also means it is by far and away the busiest of them all. If you want to be able to fully enjoy the serenity, tranquillity and beauty of one of the big lakes head to Ullswater. It seems to be the least commercialised and you are able to find some great little walks around the lake with hardly another person in sight. Just the occasional sheep, out for a stroll, like they do, sunglasses on nodding politely as they pass. Or was that something I saw in Greendale…
