KIND-HEARTED residents joined in with a community litter pick across Bridgwater.

Held in Sydenham and Bower on August 6, 14 bags of rubbish were collected in the fourth tidy up event in the series.

The Sydenham Sweepers began their litter pick at 10am outside Sydenham Community Centre, and the Bower Bin Busters started at 12pm in Bower Park.

The Sydenham Sweepers collected eight bags of rubbish with volunteers including young people and staff from the Rollercoaster, one local resident, three staff from the Parkway branch of the Coop, as well as Kristy Blackwell from the Together Team, East Bridgwater.

The Bower Bin Busters, which included three residents from the local area along with Kristy from the Together Team and staff and young people from the Rollercoaster, collected six large bags of rubbish between them.

Kristy Blackwell, Together Team coordinator, said: "In total, across the three litter picks, fifty large bags of rubbish have been collected – this is a fantastic community effort and we are delighted with the results so far.

"Anyone interested in joining one of our groups - as a one-off or for the rest of the series - should come along to the next community litter pick on September 24.

"We are hoping to collect over sixty bags of rubbish by the end of the series which will have made a huge difference to the local area."

A final 2016 litter pick will take place from the same start points and at the same times on September 24.

The litter pick groups, are being organised alongside community clear-out days - the first of which was held last month with a free skip.

The next free skip and clear-out days, funded by Homes in Sedgemoor, are being held on August 24 on the corner of Sydenham and Bayford Road with the final clear-out day for 2016 organised for September 28 on Longstone Avenue.

Gloves, litter pickers and bags were supplied by Sedgemoor District Council with all waste and recycling also collected by the council.
