A PARALYMPIAN triathlete joined the Ride to Rio charity spinathon team.

Lauren Steadman attended the start of the five day fundraising event on August 8 at the EDF Energy Hinkley Point Visitor Centre in Bridgwater.

To raise money for three different causes, the team attempted to cycle 130 miles each day, which is the equivalent of the men’s Olympic road race.

Staff will be cycling for the new 1610 Charity of the Year, Mind, EDF Energy's charity partner Paralympics GB and for Tayen's Journey, a local charity.

The challenge is a joint venture between 1610 leisure trust, the EDF Energy Hinkley Point Visitor Centre and the Angel Place Shopping Centre.

Manager from Trinity Sports and Leisure, Matt Bryant, said: "Lauren has already proven to be a fantastic inspiration in sport so what better person to have to help the teams of volunteers to cycle their way through this epic cycling event.

"We have been challenged by EDF Energy to raise £3,000 or more which will of course depend upon the support and generosity of the local community in Bridgwater."

Lauren is to compete in the Triathlon on September 11 at the Rio Paralympic Games.

The event is supported by community radio Sedgemoor FM and the Mayor of Bridgwater, Alec Glassman, helped the launch.

As part of the fundraising drive, a silent auction is also being held with exciting prizes on offer for bidders.
