A Polish lorry driver has died in a crash in Othery this morning.

Police were called at 7:30am to the A361, Grove Hill, between the Pathe Road junction and the School Lane junction.

The lorry is reported to have come off the road, hit a car and rolled over in a field.

It is now on is side and recovery work is taking place.

One passenger in the other car suffered a spinal injury.

A police spokesman said: "We were called to a serious incident in Othery at 7:30am where a lorry had left the road.

"The driver was trapped and was given treatment at the scene but died shortly afterwards."

South Western Ambulance Service also attended.

A spokesperson said: "A lorry came off the road, hit a car and rolled over into a field.

"It is now on its side.

"The driver, who was Polish, was trapped and had gone into cardiac arrest.

"Two double ambulance crew responders attended, as well as three RRVs, an officer, the HART team, an air ambulance plus two private doctors.

"There was also a second patient in the car that the lorry hit and they were treated for a spinal injury."

Fire engines from Bridgwater, Taunton and the rescue tender from Taunton were also sent to the crash.

A spokesperson for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue said: "On arrival crews discovered a road traffic collision involving a road sweeper that had left the road. One person was heavily trapped.

"Crews used two sets of hydraulic cutting equipment to release the casualty from the vehicle.

"The ambulance and the police also attended this incident."  

A member of the local parish council in the village described the scene as a 'nasty accident.'

She said: "It's a really nasty accident.

"The police have closed all the road through the village and I live that way so I don't know how I'm going to get back through.

"I can't believe what's happened here- such a tragedy."

A lady who did not wish to be named, but lives in nearby Burrowbridge, said: "I think it was a road sweeper- that's what a few people said.

"It's so sad."

The road is still closed and motorists are advised to avoid the area.
