FOLLOWING the appointment of Theresa May as Britain’s new Prime Minister, the Somerset Chamber of Commerce has spoken out regarding the need for politicians to get back to the day-to-day business of government.

Dale Edwards, chief executive of the Somerset Chamber said there will be pressure to refocus efforts.

"We welcome the swift appointment of the new Prime Minister, Theresa May," he said.

"This has been a challenging time for business, with a disproportionate amount of attention on canvassing and internal politics.

"Now that a new leader has been appointed, we and the wider British Chambers network will be putting pressure on the government to refocus their efforts on supporting the British economy and providing an environment for business growth.

"While much uncertainty remains following the recent EU referendum result, we hope that Mrs May’s appointment will bring the stability and direction that is needed in order to allow businesses to flourish."

Regarding the creation of a new government department for international trade, Mr Edwards added, "It is encouraging that Theresa May has created a new cabinet post of Secretary of State for International Trade, appointing Dr Liam Fox, MP for North Somerset, which will provide new impetus for Somerset and UK businesses wishing to export."
