A power cut left 1,185 homes across Bridgwater without electricity.

Western Power confirmed that the power loss was due to a wire fault in the Wembdon area.

Some properties in the town lost power only briefly, whilst some are expected to be without until 3pm this afternoon.

Residents in Wembdon Road, Kidsbury Road, Old Oaks Close, Wembdon Grange and Kidsbury are all currently experiencing loss of power.

Electricity in Woolavington was reported to have been on and off for the duration of the morning.

A spokesperson for Western Power said: "There was an overhead wire fault in the Wembdon area at 11:41am.

"1,185 customers were affected, and we were able to restore 503 of those within one minute.

"454 homes were back on supply at 12:22pm which was within the hour and we still have 232 without power.

"This is expected to be sorted by 2:30pm to 3pm."

One resident said he heard a 'bang noise', before the power went off.

Local people have taken to social media to express their views.

One user Wembdon commented: "Power supply exploded during a rain storm.

"National Grid have been informed- they have passed it on to local power suppliers to investigate and repair."

Alexandra Johnson Church said: "Path and Victoria road out too.

"Partner rang up Western Electric- over 620 homes affected.

"Power box that is located in the lane from church path and is smoking- no power til 3pm but may be quicker if that box is the cause of the trip."

Emma Cocks said: "I was told it may not be back till 3pm."
