ALLAN Elson, a “driving force” of the carnival world in Bridgwater, has passed away aged 60.

Allan was a life member of the Marketeers Carnival Club in Bridgwater, taking on several different roles throughout his time, and leaves behind many loving family and friends, including six grandchildren.

Paul Elson, Allan’s brother, said: “He was just a brilliant guy. We were very close and played football together.

“Allan was a very good player and he also put a lot of work into the carnival club.

“He took a keen interest in photography and always had his camera ready for a picture.

“He really will be missed by everyone.”

As well as being active on the carnival circuit, Allan played football at Bridgwater Town and Blake Old Boys Football Club, as well as having trials with Plymouth Argyle and Bristol Rovers.

Alan Windsor, of Marketeers CC, described Mr Elson as “pivotal” at the club.

He said: “I have know Allan since I joined Marketeers in late 1997.

“At the time Allan was the club treasurer as well as being the lead engineer.

“Allan played a pivotal role in the club throughout the years.

“He was a driving force during that time and he will be missed by many.”

Allan’s cousin, Martin Hodge, said the pair enjoyed many happy times together.

“We were very close as families,” he said. “We went on holidays together and he lived with us for about four years, so he was like a brother to me.

“We spent lots of leisure time together, and worked on the engineering of the carnival cart.

“When he met his wife we went for lots of couples meals and would always take the time to catch up.

“It’s such a huge shock for the family and very sad – he will be missed so much.”

Allan was best man at his closest friend, Jon Horsey’s, wedding.

Jon said: “Allan was one of our closest friends and always will be.

“No one will replace the friendship we had, nothing will replace the times we shared and the memories in our hearts and we are truly honoured to have been able to share them with him.

“I know that I, amongst many others, am sad with every passing day at the realisation of our loss, but the recollection of our friendship and of all those times shared with Allan, while bringing a heavy feeling to my heart, will always bring a smile to my face or make me chuckle. Rest in peace my friend.

“Our deepest condolences go out to Joanne, Cecil and Joan, Paul, Kerrie and Stacey, and the rest of the family and although we are far away our love and thoughts are with you constantly.”

Allan’s wife Jo, and his daughters Kerrie and Stacey, thanked people for the support they have received so far.
