THIS year's Mayor of Bridgwater has been announced.

Councillor Alec Glassford of Fairfax East ward accepted the honour in a ceremony, with Mayoress Liz Leavy, who is a Wyndham ward labour councillor.

Alex was born in Scotland and has lived in Bridgwater for more than 30 years.

He worked for the health service for 10 years in management, as well as a general manager for 14 years at Paragon Laundry in the town.

Alex has also been an active volunteer as a school bus driver and was the dedicated treasurer of the Railway club for six years, plus running his own business for the past five years.

He has been the chairman of the GWRSA in the Exeter area for the previous eight years.

Being Scottish, Alec's Mayor Making ceremony held a Scots theme with music from a highland piper, who lead the way in the procession before performing at the town hall reception.

Refreshments of pork pies and ham rolls were available.

In his acceptance speech, Alec urged the people of Bridgwater to 'get off their backsides' if they wanted to change the town.
