DEDICATED staff from EDF Energy swapped their work shoes for their trainers in the annual charity fun run.

60 employees in fancy dress from Magnox’s Hinkley Point A and EDF Energy’s B and C sites, as well as other contract partners, took part in the 6.8 mile race.

Over £9,000 was raised, which will be split between Elliot’s Touch Fund, Children’s Hospice South West, Marie Curie and The Gurkha Welfare Trust.

The route began at Hinkley Point, finishing at the nearby village of Cannington, with the race being officially started by Maureen Hudson, the wife of former employee George Hudson who organised the first Hinkley Point fun run in the late 1970s.

The run has since been an annual event.

The fastest male runner to cross the finish line was Dan Talbot, a shift manager from Hinkley Point B, who completed the course in just over 39 minutes.

Not far behind was the fastest female runner Nicola Robertson, a contract partner from Hinkley Point C, (57 minutes and 39 seconds).

The veteran’s prize went to Cyril Pidgen, an independent nuclear assurance engineer from Hinkley Point B.

An award for the best fancy dress was presented to Peter Evans, station director of Hinkley Point B, for his white rabbit ensemble.

Peter’s rabbit costume was based on the favourite toy of Elliot Stevens, the son of Hinkley Point B worker, Paul Stevens and his wife Donna, who died of Cardiomyopathy in March 2015.

The Elliot’s Touch Fund has been set up in memory.

Peter said: “It was a really successful event and I would like to thank the team who organised the fun run.

“It always proves to be a good opportunity for workers from the different organisations to support good causes along the way.”

Ron Schroder, site director of Hinkley Point A, said: “There was a good turnout and it’s wonderful to see we have raised so much money for charity.”

Volunteers from all three Hinkley sites were on hand to help marshal the route, keep times and provide encouragement and water to keep participants going.

Nigel Cann, site construction director for Hinkley Point C, said: “Well done to everyone involved.

“As the project at Hinkley Point C progresses I hope the run will go from strength to strength to raise even more in future years.”
